Abstract

This study aimed to describe the socio-demographic profile of women who chose PPUID as a form of contraception at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center. This study also describes the follow-up and complications encountered by the acceptors.

The study was conducted at Northern Mindanao Medical Center in Cagayan de Oro City from February 01, 2013 to January 31, 2015. Women admitted and delivered at NMMC were counseled regarding IUD used. CuT 380A IUD was inserted within 10 minutes of delivery of the placenta, within 48 hours after delivery and intracesarean in acceptors who fulfilled the Medical Eligibility Criteria and had no contraindications for PPIUD.

A total of 16, 724 women delivered during the time of the study of which 1,476 (8.83 %) accepted PPIUD. 941 (63.75 %) were inserted within 48 hours after delivery. 1,039 women (70.39 %) aged 20 -35, 939 (63.62 %) finished high school, 902 (61.11 %) were urban dwellers, 924 (62.60 %) had 2 - 4 children, 814 (55.15.%) used the PPIUD for spacing children. 1.327 (80.91 %) were new acceptors, 907 (61.45 %) were single. December 2014 had the most number of acceptors, 688 (46.61 %) were inserted by the nurses, 1,091 (73.92 %) had no follow-up done, 1,449 (98.17 %) had no complications. Of the 27 complications noted, 21 (77,78 %) had missing string.

In this study, PPIUD is a safe, effective, has high retention rate of 99.59 %. It was also demonstrated that most of the acceptors were aged 20 - 35 years and most had the IUD inserted for spacing purposes. The benefits of IUD outweigh the risk. The PPIUD is a long-acting, reversible contraceptive which in this study had a minimal complication which can be managed in the clinic.
