Abstract

To determine the demographic and clinical profiles of breast cancer patients in Northern Mindanao Medical Center from April 2013 to December 2016 who availed of the PhilHealth Z package, a descriptive, retrospective study was conducted.  Data was taken from a list of patients obtained from the hospital's Billing Section.  Individual patient's charts were reviewed and the following data were recorded: age, sex, Tumor Node Metastasis (TNM) Stage, menopause status, as well as the treatment received and the socioeconomic status.

Seventy patients were included in the study. Majority belonged to the 41-50  years old category and belonged to Class D social category.  41% of patients were positive for estrogen/progesterone receptors (ER/PR).  Half of the patients were diagnosed with Stage II B breast carcinomas.  Most patients received treatment combinations of surgery (Modified Radical Mastectomy), chemotherapy, with or without hormonal therapy.

This study showed that although patients were able to avail of the PhilHealth Z-package for breast carcinoma treatment, many of them are lost to follow up and thus, they are not able to avail of the full course of treatment.  It is therefore recommended that for breast cancer patients applying for the Z package, they should be informed that follow up at the oncology clinic is important even after completion of treatment.
