Abstract

Patient waiting time has gained attention and emerged as an important indicator of a quality health care delivery. It is also an important contributor of patient satisfaction. The present study aimed to determine the waiting time among new patients consulting at the Department of Family and Community Medicine Department, Northern Mindanao Medical Center from September 2011 to February 2012, and explore the factors affecting the patient's waiting time.

During the month of September 2011-February 2012, an observational study was conducted among new patients consulting in the Department of Family and Community Medicine Clinic, Northern Mindanao Medical Center. Baseline data of outpatient waiting time were recorded from the time of registration until the time the patient leaves after the consultation. Data from a total of 907 patients were included in the study. The average of the total waiting time for new outpatients in the clinic was 95 minutes.  It was fifty minutes longer than the institution's standard waiting time. The patient's address and time of consult were negatively correlated to the waiting time. The number of physician in the clinic and day of consult were positively correlated to the waiting time. Age groups, sex, educational attainment, occupation, duty status and year level of physician were not correlated to the waiting time. The study showed that the mean waiting time was 95 minutes which was twice longer than the institution's standard waiting time. Majority of these patients who had longer waiting time were lost and waited in a different waiting area.
